You need to format the disk before you can use it must rank among the worst-phrased warnings in computing. It describes a clerical problem in the language of an empty shelf. Two separate things live on a memory card: the photographs, and a small table saying which block each one begins and ends at. Damage that table and the card can no longer answer the first question a computer puts to it, so the computer concludes the card must be blank and offers to set it up fresh. Not one photograph has gone anywhere.
The danger is entirely in what the message tempts you to do next. Accept the format and a clean empty table goes down on top of the damaged one. Put the card back in the camera and new frames land on the blocks the old ones are using. Neither has an undo. Up to that point every photograph is still sitting in the flash untouched, which is why the most valuable thing you can do with a card that has started playing up is eject it and leave it in a drawer.
Clear the boring explanations first, because two of them come up constantly. The small lock tab on the side of a full-size SD card gets nudged down inside a bag, and a locked card then reads erratically or refuses outright. Contacts collect finger grease and pocket grit, and a dry cloth deals with that for nothing. Readers matter far more than people credit, too. A three-year-old adapter rattling about in a camera bag, or a laptop slot that has swallowed a thousand cards, will misread media that a decent reader handles without a murmur. Put the card through a second reader and a second computer before drawing any conclusion about the card.
The list of things not to do is shorter, and it matters more than the list above it. Do not format, no matter how politely the box asks. Do not slot the card back in the camera to fire off a test frame or two. A card that will not take a format, claims a fraction of the capacity printed on it, or comes up as 0 MB has almost certainly lost its controller rather than its index. That small processor sits between the flash and everything else, and it has stopped translating properly. No consumer tool sees past a controller in that state, and the low-level format utilities the forums recommend are a reliable way to lose a card that still holds something you want.
Getting past a dead controller on the bench means going round it rather than negotiating with it. Where the controller still responds, the card is imaged behind a write blocker in careful passes. Where it does not, the flash is read straight off the chips on a specialist programmer, the controller's own private filing scheme is worked out from scratch, and the pictures are carved back out by their content signatures.
