A drive out of a machine is easier, not harder. On the bench there is no operating system deciding what it will and will not mount, no boot process to get through and no repair routine trying to be helpful. There is a drive and a controlled read.
Whatever killed the laptop is not automatically the drive. Shops replace drives because that fixes the symptom quickest, not because the old drive has necessarily been proved dead. It is worth knowing what was actually wrong before assuming the worst about the files.
This one was a partition problem. The structure describing where the volume started and ended was damaged, so the machine could not boot and could not offer the files. The files themselves were untouched and sitting exactly where they had been left.

The partition structure was rebuilt in R-Studio and the filesystem parsed, which brought the whole user profile back with its folder structure intact. The insurance paperwork, the licence renewal and the christening photographs were located, validated by opening them, and written to fresh media.
He asked for a handful of files and got the lot, folders and all, because once the partition was rebuilt there was no reason to hand back less. The old drive went back in the box with them.
One drive, £300 + VAT. A damaged partition structure is logical work, nothing was opened and no board was touched, so the job ran on no fix, no fee terms.
Keep the old one and keep it somewhere dry and still. Do not let anybody wipe it for reuse and do not put it into an external caddy to have a go, because plugging an unhealthy drive into a live Windows machine invites a repair prompt you do not want to accept. If the machine was replaced because it would not boot, that is often a logical fault and the files are usually all present behind it. There is no rush once the drive is out of service, but there is no benefit in experimenting either. Post it in an antistatic bag.
