A researcher came back from two weeks away to a drive that would not wake up. It held survey data from a season of fieldwork on the estuary, counts and readings that could not be repeated without another year. One recovery firm had already tried and returned it with a report saying the drive was unrecoverable. She sent the report along with the drive.

Read the previous report, then ignore its conclusion. The useful part is what was tried, because it tells the bench what not to spend time on. The conclusion is only as good as the equipment behind it.
The gap between firms is usually the service area. A drive keeps its own working data in a reserved region the user never sees. If that region is damaged the drive never comes ready, and every piece of recovery software ever written is stuck at that point, because software cannot address a drive that has not introduced itself. Repairing it needs hardware that speaks to the drive in its own diagnostic mode.
Nothing about that fault touches the data. The survey files were untouched throughout. What had failed was the drive's ability to say who it was.
Second opinions are not always better news, and it is worth saying so. Where a previous firm has opened a drive and scored the platters, or where the surfaces were already ruined, the second answer is the same as the first. Here the platters were clean and the fault was in code.
The earlier report was read first, which established that the previous attempt had been software based and that the drive had not been opened. That mattered, because it meant the inside was still sealed and uncontaminated.

The season's counts and readings came back complete. The previous firm had not damaged anything, which is worth stating plainly, but they had also not been able to reach the fault.
One drive, £300 + VAT. Service area repair is firmware work, which is logical, so this ran on no fix, no fee terms. If a second opinion here ever ends in the same answer as the first, it ends without a bill.
Send the previous report with the drive. It saves repeating work and it tells the new bench whether the drive has been opened, which changes everything about how it is handled. Ask what was actually done: a software attempt and a clean-air attempt are different jobs with different implications, and a drive that has been opened badly needs different handling. Do not power the drive up in between to see whether anything has changed. If the first firm has scored the platters or the surfaces were already gone, expect the same answer twice, honestly given. If the fault was in firmware, expect a very different one.
