The Camera Shows Them, the Laptop Will Not

A photographer had spent a low-tide morning on Crosby beach and got the frames she wanted. The card played them back on the camera all the way home. Plugged into the laptop, nothing would copy across. A shop told me the card is faulty, she wrote, which was true as far as it went, and it was a card she had bought new for the job.

A camera and a computer read a card differently. The camera knows what it wrote and where, and its playback leans on its own conventions. A computer has to go through the filesystem properly, from the boot sector down. Damage the filesystem and the camera can still put pictures on its screen while the computer sees a card it cannot make sense of.

Playback is the best evidence you can have. If the camera is still rendering frames, the frames are still in the memory. The problem is the index, not the contents. That is the difference between a job with a good prognosis and a job without one.

The shop was right that the card had failed and wrong about what that meant. A faulty card is not an empty card. The advice that follows a verdict like that is usually to reformat and start again, and reformatting is precisely the instruction that would have turned a recoverable card into a lost morning.

Being new is not protection. New cards fail, particularly around the filesystem, and particularly if a camera is switched off or a battery goes while it is writing. That she had bought it for the shoot is bad luck, not carelessness.

The card went behind a hardware write blocker before it was read at all, so no format, no repair and no automatic tidy-up could reach it. It was imaged in full on a controlled card reader, and everything afterwards was done to the image rather than the card.

The filesystem was parsed in R-Studio from the image and the damaged structures rebuilt, which recovered most frames with their filenames and timestamps intact. Where directory references had gone entirely, the remaining images were carved out by content signature with PhotoRec. Every frame was validated by rendering it rather than by trusting a file count, then written to fresh media.

The full set from the beach came back, most of it with the original filenames and shot order, the remainder carved and matched back by timestamp. The card itself was returned but not recommended for further use.

Cards and USB pen drives are £250 + VAT. This was a filesystem fault, which is logical work, so it ran on no fix, no fee terms and nothing was payable until she had seen the frames.

When the camera can see them and the computer cannot

Take the card out and stop shooting on it. Every further frame written to a card with a damaged filesystem risks landing on top of something you want. Do not accept a format, do not let the camera repair the card, and be wary of a shop verdict that ends in start again. If the camera is still showing your pictures, the pictures are still there and the job is to rebuild the index around them. Post the card in a rigid case.
