Silent, and the Cable Was Not the Problem

A print shop in Kirkdale lost the machine holding its artwork and job files. The drive was not detected, so they swapped the SATA cable, which is the right first move, and it made no difference. What struck them most was the silence: no spin, no click, nothing at all when the power went on.

Silence is the most informative symptom on this list. A drive that clicks or whirs has at least got power to the mechanism. A drive that does nothing at all has usually not, and that points at the board rather than the heads.

Swapping the cable was the correct first step. It rules out the cheapest possible cause in two minutes. Having ruled it out, they stopped, which is the second correct step and rarer than the first.

The ROM is the part of the board that cannot be substituted. Every modern drive has adaptive data unique to that individual mechanism stored on its board. Fit a donor board straight and the drive will not read its own platters correctly, because the tuning is wrong. The original ROM has to be transferred across.

This is where the terms bite, so it is worth being exact. Board repair is electronic work. The published rule reads: no fix, no fee all jobs except electronic and mechanical failures, chip level work, DVR and Forensic jobs. A board job takes 50% of the quoted price upfront. Firmware work is different and is covered, but a firmware fault and a board fault are not the same thing and are never quoted as though they were.

The drive went onto a current-limited bench supply first so the fault could be found without pushing current through it. The draw confirmed a short on the board rather than a mechanism refusing to turn. Under the stereo microscope the failed component was identified.

The board was repaired and this drive's own ROM transferred across, desoldered under hot air and refitted to the repaired board so the adaptive data matched the mechanism it belonged to. The drive then spun and came ready normally. It was read behind a hardware write blocker on PC-3000 UDMA, imaged on DeepSpar, and the filesystem parsed in R-Studio. Artwork and job files were validated by opening a sample and written to fresh media.

The board was rebuilt, the drive imaged, and the shop's artwork and job files came back complete. The mechanism had never been the problem and the platters were never at risk.

One drive, £300 + VAT. This was board-level electronic work, so 50% of the quote was payable before the bench started and the balance only on success. No fix, no fee does not cover it, and nobody should tell you otherwise.

A drive that is completely silent

Rule out the cheap things once and then stop. Try a different cable and a different power connector, and if the drive is external try a different port, but do all of that once. Repeatedly powering a drive with a shorted board can take out components that were still fine, and on some designs it can damage the protection that is currently saving the rest of the circuit. Do not fit a donor board bought online. Boards look interchangeable and are not, because the adaptive data for your specific mechanism lives on your board, and swapping one in blind can leave the drive reading its own platters wrongly.
