Repeated small impacts add up. A single fall can end a drive outright. Several smaller ones over years do their damage cumulatively, until the head stack no longer sits where it should and the drive stops reading.
Nine years is not the fault. Drives do wear, but data does not decay on a platter over a decade in a house. Age is why it had been dropped so many times, not why it stopped.
The shop did the right thing. A general repair shop's tools are software tools, and software cannot help a drive with a mechanical fault. Recognising that and referring it on is better service than pressing ahead and giving the drive a dozen more power cycles.
Light marking sets a ceiling, and the ceiling is stated before the quote. One region of these platters showed marking consistent with the history of knocks. That region was mapped, the imaging planned around it, and the realistic extent set out in writing before any money changed hands.

Almost everything came back. A small number of files sat in the marked region and were listed individually so the family knew precisely what was affected rather than being told most of it was fine.

Stop running it. A drive with a history of impacts has a head stack that is already out of true, and every further hour of use adds marking to surfaces that are otherwise readable. Do not leave a copy running overnight in the hope it gets through. Do not let a shop run recovery software against it either, because software cannot help a mechanical fault and the attempt costs you power cycles. Send it in unpowered and say honestly how many times it has been dropped and roughly when, because the history helps the bench work out where to expect marking.
