Most drive faults are invisible. Burnt components and physical damage are the exception. Firmware corruption, service area faults and early mechanical wear all leave a drive looking exactly as it did the day it was bought.
A hard disk problem message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Windows reports it when reads fail repeatedly. It does not distinguish between a failing mechanism, a corrupt service area and a drive that has stopped coming ready, and those need entirely different work.
The order of the assessment matters. Firmware, service area, board, mechanism, filesystem, checked in turn rather than guessed at. On this drive the board tested healthy, the mechanism spun and settled correctly, and the service area held the fault.
The terms follow the finding, not the symptom. Because this was firmware, it ran on no fix, no fee. A sample was opened in Word and in a PDF reader to confirm the files were genuinely intact rather than merely present, then the whole set was written to fresh media.
Case files, correspondence and the whole document archive came back, opened and checked rather than just counted. The drive that looked perfect had been perfectly fine everywhere except in its own firmware.
One drive, £300 + VAT, on no fix, no fee terms, because service area repair is logical work. Nothing was opened in clean air and no board repair was involved.
Do not take the absence of damage as a reason to keep trying it. Firmware faults, service area corruption and early mechanical problems all look like nothing at all from the outside, and one of those three gets worse every time the drive is powered. Do not run a check disk and do not let Windows repair the drive, because repair tools write. If the drive has come out of a machine that reported a hard disk problem, note down exactly what the machine said, because the wording sometimes narrows things usefully.
