Nothing Visibly Wrong, and Nothing Readable

A solicitors' practice in Chester had a machine develop a hard disk problem. The drive was taken out and it looked perfect. No marks, no smell of burnt electronics, nothing rattling. It simply could not be read. On it were case files, correspondence and years of documents in Word and PDF.

Most drive faults are invisible. Burnt components and physical damage are the exception. Firmware corruption, service area faults and early mechanical wear all leave a drive looking exactly as it did the day it was bought.

A hard disk problem message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Windows reports it when reads fail repeatedly. It does not distinguish between a failing mechanism, a corrupt service area and a drive that has stopped coming ready, and those need entirely different work.

The order of the assessment matters. Firmware, service area, board, mechanism, filesystem, checked in turn rather than guessed at. On this drive the board tested healthy, the mechanism spun and settled correctly, and the service area held the fault.

The terms follow the finding, not the symptom. Because this was firmware, it ran on no fix, no fee. Had the same invisible drive turned out to have a failed board or a head fault, half the quote would have been payable upfront, because electronic and mechanical work is carved out of no fix, no fee by the published terms.

The drive went behind a hardware write blocker onto PC-3000 UDMA. Firmware, service area, board, mechanism and filesystem were each assessed in turn. The board tested healthy, the mechanism spun and settled properly, and the service area held corrupt structures that stopped the drive coming ready.

Those structures were rebuilt from the drive's own redundant copies, after which the drive came ready normally and was imaged on DeepSpar. The filesystem was parsed in R-Studio from the image and the documents located. A sample was opened in Word and in a PDF reader to confirm the files were genuinely intact rather than merely present, then the whole set was written to fresh media.

Case files, correspondence and the whole document archive came back, opened and checked rather than just counted. The drive that looked perfect had been perfectly fine everywhere except in its own firmware.

One drive, £300 + VAT, on no fix, no fee terms, because service area repair is logical work. Nothing was opened in clean air and no board repair was involved.

A drive with no visible damage that cannot be read

Do not take the absence of damage as a reason to keep trying it. Firmware faults, service area corruption and early mechanical problems all look like nothing at all from the outside, and one of those three gets worse every time the drive is powered. Do not run a check disk and do not let Windows repair the drive, because repair tools write. If the drive has come out of a machine that reported a hard disk problem, note down exactly what the machine said, because the wording sometimes narrows things usefully. Post the drive on its own in an antistatic bag.
