A removals firm in Aintree kept four external drives in an unheated lock-up over a hard winter. Brought back inside and given several days to warm up, not one of them would come up. Three were Seagate and one was a WD Elements, and between them they held job records, inventories and customer paperwork going back years.

Cold storage does its damage on the way back in. A drive that has been sitting at outdoor temperature and is brought into a warm room collects condensation on and inside its electronics. Do that over a season of cold nights and warm afternoons and it happens repeatedly.
Several days indoors does not fix it. The visible moisture goes. What it has already started does not. Corrosion at solder joints and on exposed tracks carries on quietly once it has begun, and it is why drives that seem to have dried out still refuse to work.
Powering a damp board is the mistake to avoid. Current through a corroded track or a bridged joint is how a drive with a survivable problem becomes one with a destroyed board. None of these four was powered before it was inspected.
Four drives is four jobs. They were stored together and they failed together, but each has its own board, its own damage and its own condition, and each is assessed, quoted and worked separately. Three of these needed board work. The fourth needed cleaning and nothing else.
Nothing was powered on arrival. Each drive was taken out of its enclosure and its board examined under a stereo microscope for moisture and corrosion. All four showed corrosion at the connector end. Three had it far enough onto the board to have affected tracks or components.
Each board was cleaned in an ultrasonic bath with isopropyl and dried thoroughly. Corroded tracks and components were addressed on the three that needed it, with each drive's own ROM retained so the adaptive data stayed matched to its own mechanism. Each drive was then read behind a hardware write blocker on PC-3000 UDMA and imaged on DeepSpar. The filesystems were parsed in R-Studio from the images, and the records validated and written to fresh media.
All four came back. The platters had never been affected, which is usually the case with condensation damage: the harm is done to the electronics and the electronics are repairable.
Each drive is a separate job at £300 + VAT. Water and condensation damage, and the board work that followed it, both sit outside no fix, no fee, so 50% of each quoted price was payable upfront with the balance on success. Four separate figures were given in writing before anything started.
Do not plug them in to check. A drive brought in from the cold has condensation on and inside its electronics, and putting power through a damp or corroding board is what turns a repairable drive into a scrapped one. Do not use a hairdryer or a radiator either, because heat drives moisture further in and can lift components. Let them reach room temperature in the bag they travelled in, keep them unpowered, and send them as they are. If you have several, send them all: they will have been stored in the same conditions but they will not have suffered identically, and each needs assessing on its own.
