An engineering firm in Runcorn needed drawings off an enhanced IDE drive from an old workstation. They had already sent it somewhere, it had come back unrecovered, and it had come back having been opened. The question was whether a drive that had been through all that was worth another attempt.

Old interfaces are a practical problem, not a technical one. Enhanced IDE has been out of general use for years and most benches no longer have a way to talk to it properly. Equipment that still speaks it natively exists, and reading the drive on its own interface is far better than adapting it through two layers of conversion.
An opened drive is a harder job with an unchanged prognosis. Contamination introduced during an earlier opening has to be found and cleaned before anything spins. That is time. It does not remove data from platters.
What does matter is what was done while it was open. If a drive has been powered with contamination inside and heads already damaged, the surfaces take the consequences. Here there was light marking, consistent with a short run in that state, and it had not gone through the magnetic layer.
The readable extent was established before the quote. On a drive with any surface marking, the honest approach is to inspect, work out what is realistically readable, say so, and then quote against that, rather than quote for everything and apologise afterwards.
The previous firm's work was reviewed first so their steps were not repeated. The drive was read over its native IDE interface behind a hardware write blocker on PC-3000, and its condition assessed, before it went into clean air under laminar flow.
Contamination from the earlier opening was cleaned and the platters inspected under the stereo microscope. The light marking was mapped so the imaging order could be planned around it. Matched donor heads were fitted, alignment set, and the drive imaged on DeepSpar with the healthy regions taken first and the marked ones approached last. Drawings were located in R-Studio and validated by opening a sample in the software that made them.
The archive came back essentially whole, with a small number of files affected by the marked regions and identified individually so the firm knew exactly which drawings needed reconstructing.
One drive, £300 + VAT, with 50% payable upfront because the drive had to be opened in clean air. Mechanical work sits outside no fix, no fee. The recoverable extent was set out in writing before the deposit was taken.
Do not buy a USB adapter and try it yourself. Adapters for legacy interfaces are unreliable, they hide errors behind their own translation, and some of them will happily let Windows write a signature to a drive you wanted untouched. If a drive has already been opened by somebody else, say so, because contamination changes how it is handled and it is faster to know than to discover. Do not power an opened drive to see whether it still spins. Old drives are recoverable, the age is not the obstacle, and the data on them has not faded.
