An illustrator working off Lark Lane had lived with a drive that needed persuading. You had to wiggle the wire to get it to come on, and then it would drop out mid copy, and after a macOS update it started mounting read only, and then one morning it did not come on at all. She had already bought a second drive to move everything onto. She just could not get anything off the first one.

A wiggle is a diagnosis. If the position of the cable changes whether the drive works, the fault is mechanical and it is in the connection, not in the data. Solder joints at a USB port take every flex and every knock the cable passes on, and eventually one of them cracks. Holding the cable at the right angle closes the crack. Letting go opens it.
The read-only phase was the same fault wearing a different hat. A drive that keeps dropping out mid write leaves its filesystem in an unclean state, and a Mac that finds a volume in that state will mount it read only rather than risk making things worse. That looked like a software problem arriving with an update. It was the port, still failing, expressed in a different way.
Stopping altogether was the predictable end of it. Cracked joints do not heal. Each successful wiggle flexes the joint a little further. She had been living on the last few millimetres of a connection that was always going to run out.
The data was never the injured party. Nothing in this fault reaches the platters. Once the drive could be powered stably it read like any healthy drive, which is why the imaging was uneventful.
The port was examined under a stereo microscope, where the fractured joints were visible without needing to look hard. The joints were reflowed and the connector body re-anchored to the board so the drive could be powered and held powered without anything being held at an angle.
From there it went behind a hardware write blocker onto PC-3000 UDMA and was imaged on DeepSpar. The filesystem was parsed in R-Studio from the image, which also cleared up the unclean state the drive had been left in by all those interrupted transfers. Files were validated and written to the replacement drive she had already bought and sent in with it.
The port was rebuilt, the drive imaged and everything on it moved across to the new drive she had been trying to fill for weeks. She got both drives back, one working and one worth keeping as it was.
One drive, £300 + VAT. Rebuilding a port is electronic work, so this job took 50% of the quoted price upfront with the balance on success. No fix, no fee covers logical faults only, and soldering is not one of them.
Stop using it. A drive that needs the cable wiggled is telling you a joint has cracked, and every further wiggle takes the crack further. Do not run backups off it, because a transfer that fails halfway leaves the filesystem in a worse state than it started. Do not swap cables and hope, either. The cable is rarely the part that has failed, and by the time it mounts read only the drive has usually been dropping out for months. Unplug it, keep the drive, and send it in while the fault is still only a connection.
