A recording studio in the Baltic Triangle ran its sessions off a LaCie Rugged, the orange one that gets carried between rooms. It stopped without warning mid week. Now it makes a whirring noise and no machine in the building sees it plugged in. The multitracks for two half-finished records were on it.

Whirring is a mechanism under load. A healthy drive is close to silent at idle. A continuous whir means something is turning against resistance, or heads are cycling without ever settling. Either way the drive is working hard and getting nowhere.
Not recognised follows from that. A drive only appears on a machine once it has read its own start-up information off the platters. If the mechanism cannot get to that point, there is nothing to appear.
The noise is the argument against trying again. Whatever is labouring is labouring across surfaces that hold the sessions. Time spent powered is time spent risking them, and there is no version of trying it once more that gathers useful information.
A rugged case does not mean a rugged mechanism. The rubber shell protects against knocks in transit. Inside is the same platters and heads as anything else, with the same limits.
It was not run further. On a current-limited bench supply the noise and the power draw were characterised together, which separated a labouring mechanism from a board pulling the supply down. It went into clean air under laminar flow.
The heads, motor and platters were inspected under the stereo microscope. Matched donor heads were fitted and the spindle checked for free rotation, alignment was set, and the drive imaged on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA. Session files were located in R-Studio from the image and validated by playing samples rather than by counting files, which matters with audio projects where a session is only as good as its component takes.
The mechanism was rebuilt, the drive imaged and both records' sessions came back with their takes intact. Studios tend to want the folder structure as much as the audio, and that came back too.

Unplug it. A whirring drive is a mechanism labouring over the surfaces that hold your work, and every further minute of power is spent on the wrong side of that. Do not try a different cable, a different machine or a powered hub in the hope of a better result, because the noise is coming from inside the drive and no host will change it. Do not shake it or freeze it. If you work off a single portable drive, this is the failure that will eventually find you, so get the drive assessed and get a second copy of anything current in the meantime.
