Spinning up tells you the motor and board work. That is all it tells you. The board delivered power and the spindle turned. Neither of those is reading.
The clicks are a counted sequence, not a random noise. The drive tries to find its bearings a set number of times, fails each time, and then shuts down deliberately to protect itself. That shutdown is the drive making a sensible decision.
Sounding almost right is the trap. Because it spins up, people plug it in again, and again, and each cycle is another set of retries with heads that cannot read. That is the sequence that scores platters. The family here tried it a handful of times and then stopped, which was the right instinct.
None of this is about the files. The photographs and documents sit on the platters, untouched by any of it. What has failed is the equipment used to read them.
