It Beeps, and Makes Other Odd Noises

A junior football club in Kirkby kept everything on one Seagate: team photographs going back years, registrations, fixtures, the lot. It started beeping. It was not detected on the secretary's Mac and it was not detected on the treasurer's Windows machine either. It had been fine the week before, and the club had almost no money to spend on it.

The decode

Beeping is the sound of a motor trying. The board is applying current, the spindle is not turning, and the noise you hear is that stalled attempt repeating. It is not a warning tone and it is not a code being reported.

Stiction is the usual cause. If heads come to rest on the platter surface rather than parking properly, they can stick to it, and the motor cannot generate enough torque to break them free. It happens to drives that were working perfectly the day before.

Being dead on both a Mac and a PC rules out the computers. Two operating systems, two machines, same nothing. That is a drive-side fault and it saves everyone the time of testing hosts.

Do not try to free it by hand. The advice that circulates involves tapping, twisting or turning the drive sharply. That drags stuck heads across the surface, which is exactly the outcome you are trying to avoid. Freeing stiction is done with the case open and the heads under control.

It was not forced. On a current-limited bench supply the draw confirmed a seized spindle rather than a board fault or a head fault. It went into clean air under laminar flow.

The spindle was assessed and the stiction released with the heads lifted clear and under control, so nothing was dragged across the surfaces. The head stack was inspected under the stereo microscope and found undamaged, which is a direct result of the drive not having been shaken or repeatedly powered. It was imaged on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA, and the club's records and photographs located in R-Studio and validated.

The motor was freed, the drive imaged, and years of team photographs and club paperwork came back. The heads never needed replacing, which kept the job as simple as this kind of work gets.

A drive that beeps

Unplug it and do not tap it. The internet is full of advice about giving a beeping drive a sharp turn or a knock to free the motor, and that advice will cost you your data, because whatever is stuck is stuck to the surface holding it. Do not put it in the freezer either. Do not keep trying it in case it catches, because each stalled attempt is more strain on a mechanism that is already jammed.
